Apple is currently in discussions with Google regarding the potential utilization of Gemini to integrate generative AI functionalities into iPhones, reports Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. This collaboration could significantly impact Google’s Gemini chatbot, which has faced various controversies recently. While Apple is developing AI features for its upcoming iOS 18, these enhancements may primarily focus on on-device features rather than cloud-based services. Partnering with Google could enable the incorporation of diverse generative AI capabilities, including image generation and essay writing based on text prompts.
However, these negotiations also suggest that Apple’s progress in AI may not be as advanced as previously thought. Despite testing its large language model, Ajax, and providing access to the Apple GPT chatbot to employees, sources indicate that Apple’s AI technology still lags behind competitors like Google.
Although discussions are ongoing, a finalized agreement between Google and Apple may not be announced until June, coinciding with Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference. Additionally, Apple might explore alternative options for generative AI technology, such as partnering with OpenAI or Anthropic.
For Google, a potential partnership with Apple could provide a significant boost to its Gemini AI chatbot within the fiercely competitive AI landscape. Leveraging Apple’s extensive user base of approximately 2 billion individuals could help the chatbot overcome recent controversies and strengthen its position in the market.
